What sort of music do we sing?

We sing unaccompanied in 3 or 4 parts and perform without sheet music/words (so we need to learn the pieces off by heart). We have quite a wide repertoire including songs from musicals, traditional folk songs, spirituals, gospel, barbershop and more modern pop songs. See [here] on our website for some recordings of our performances.

What kind of performances do we do and how often?

It varies from year to year. Recently we performed at the Joseph Rowntree community choir festival and over Christmas we sang at three care homes and also put on our own public concert to raise money for the choir and Parkinsons. We will be performing at the Barbican Christmas Carol concert in December 2023 which we’re really looking forward to!

How do I decide which section of the choir to join?

No, not all our members can read music but it helps if you can. So long as you have a musical ear and can hold a tune you are welcome to join us! As well as our weekly rehearsals you are welcome to come to our musical director, Polly’s house for some ‘note-bashing’ to get you up to speed as there is a lot to learn when you first join.

Currently our sections are ‘Tops’ (sopranos), ‘Leads’ (altos), ‘Baritones’ and ‘Basses’. Depending on the piece, different sections of the choir will sing the tune. You are very welcome to try different parts to see which you prefer before you decide which one to join.
